Our Afternoon Programs – About

This 2021/2022 school year, we are very excited to once again offer a series of After School Programs, day-time programs, afternoon workshops, bike clubs, and weekend workshops, widening the breadth of our Jr. Youth Outdoor Studies & Environmental Science Programs.

This school year, our Afternoon Programs in the West Chester Creek Greenbelt, The Hillside Trails, and in the woods behind Rilke Schule explore the wild/urban connection that exists in our West Chester Creek Greenbelt, Westchester Lagoon, and the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. The focus will be outdoor studies and environmental science through hands-on learning and play. Topics and themes will loosely follow the seasons and the weather, and we take learning opportunities as they occur through exploration and observation.

In the Fall/Winter 2021 Semester, we will be working with our youth explorers to develop a collaborative nature journal where characters, maps, and plots are born from imagination and are interwoven with the science and activities behind our local urban-wild connection.

Our COVID-19 Precautions

The Pandemic is a rapidly-evolving scene and our policy can sometimes become outdated overnight. In short, we follow current CDC, State of AK, and ASD guidelines, whatever they may be in that moment.

In addition to following State of AK and CDC guidelines, we will follow both ASD and each school’s guidelines based on the program we are operating. All of our guides are vaccinated and we will be wearing masks in indoor spaces, and potentially outdoors depending on the level of risk in the community and as recommended by local and national health officials.

Our Afternoon Session Operating Calendar

Our after school programming runs from Mid August to Late May, following the Anchorage School District 2021/2022 calendar. After School Programs operate on all scheduled school days and not on in-service days, half-days, or winter and spring break. We do offer specific in-service, half-days, winter, and spring break programs – check out “our programs” page for more information.

Trip, Camp, & Cancellation Policies

Quite a lot of energy goes into creating a carefully curated Outdoor Studies Program, from lesson plans, community outreach, partnerships, and most significantly, hiring. We seek out the most highly-qualified staff to support our program, care for youth, and represent our mission and goals; staff are hired based on enrollment numbers. When we hire our staff, we enter into a commitment with them – we are helping support their livelihoods. However, we also understand life happens and plans can change – this is why we have developed a comprehensive, transparent cancellation policy. We must do our best to support and provide service to both our customers and our employees; both of these very important aspects have informed our policies.

Click here to submit a program cancellation notification to us, or fill out the form below – We will review your notification and issue credit or refund according to our cancellation policy.

We are currently offering two distinct after school programs: an afternoon session in the West Chester Greenbelt, and a Friday program at Rilke Schule. All of our afternoon and afterschool programs are nearly 100% outdoors. We utilize indoor spaces only when the temperature and/or windchill is below 15 degrees fahrenheit – sometimes to briefly warm up, and on very cold days we remain indoors with a bevy of engaging outdoor learning activities.

The program in the Westchester greenbelt offers pick up from Chugach Optional Elementary School at 3:00 and from Inlet View Elementary at 3:45. Additionally, parents who are homeschooling or attending a different school are welcome to drop their child(ren) off with us for an afternoon session of outdoor play and learning at the same location.

The program at Rilke Schule is for Rilke Students only, is run through RSI and can be booked through their website here. We run our program in the multi-acre wood behind Rilke Schule.
